ZETTLER Relays – Product Spotlight, May 2021.
The trend away from the combustion engine towards electromobility continues. 2020 showed a global increase in electric vehicles sales of more than three million vehicles compared to the previous year. This strong worldwide trend drives the need for charging infrastructure in the private sector, and it is expected to grow exponentially.
EV-Charging is carried out via wall charging stations (wall boxes) or by using charging cables with integrated electronics (ICCPD). Products that are used here must comply with current standards such as IEC62752 for ICCPD mode 2 charging, or with IEC61851-1 for charging in accordance with mode 3 for wall boxes. These standards carry stringent requirement, for example with respect to the ability to withstand significant short-circuits.
In recent years, ZETTLER has developed a number of products especially for this area. While modified relays for solar applications, such as the ZETTLER’s AZSR250, were suitable for usage in first-generation cable chargers, or our AZSR131 solar relay for smaller wall boxes, or AZSR165/AZSR190 relays for use in stationary chargers, the development of a range of more specific EV charging relays was mostly driven by the evolution of very demanding technical standards.
In addition to relays, ZETTLER Group also manufactures magnetics and transformer components such as current sensors, as well as a broad line of LCD and TFT displays.
Thus, a new generation of relays in ZETTLER’s AZEV product series were being developed, with special design features supporting applications in EV charging infrastructure.
In addition to AZEV116 for currents of maximum 20 A and AZEV132 of maximum 40 A, the new AZEV140 relay is specified for currents of up to 50A, thus further expanding ZETTLER’s existing series of EV charging relays.
This single-pole AZEV140 PCB relay is approved at UL, CUR and TÜV with a load of 50 A with 6k switching cycles (40 A with 30k switching cycles / 32 A with 50k switching cycles) for the load contact (1FormA) and 10 mA 12 VDC with 50k switching cycles for the signal monitoring contact (1FormB) as required by IEC62752. The potential free monitoring contact makes this type of relay ideally suited for applications with high security demands.
A new 4-pole version AZEV440, compliant with IEC 62955, is currently also under development by ZETTLER.
In addition to relays, ZETTLER Group also manufactures magnetics and transformer components including current sensors, as well as a broad line of LCD and TFT displays.
